Jared Goff concluded a stellar season with the Detroit Lions, showcasing his prowess as their newfound franchise quarterback. Despite the NFC Championship ending the team’s enchanting run, Goff’s achievements in 2023 have positioned him for a lucrative future. The NFL Media reports that discussions for a contract extension with Goff are set to intensify during the upcoming offseason. Notably, Goff has one more year left on his existing contract, entailing a $21.65 million base salary for 2024, as per Spotrac. The Lions had briefly engaged in extension talks with Goff before the start of the recent season.
Expressing his attachment to the team, Goff stated, “I’ve loved every second of my time here and would love more. I love Dan (Campbell), I love the coaches, and all my teammates. Yeah, it would be great. But it’s not up to me.” The quarterback’s sentiments reflect his positive connection with the Lions’ environment.
During this postseason, Goff achieved historical milestones by ending decade-long playoff win droughts for two different teams, a unique feat in NFL history. Additionally, he became the 10th starting quarterback to reach the conference championship game with multiple franchises. As contract talks loom, Spotrac’s market value tool estimates a potential four-year extension worth $149,853,080, carrying an average annual value (AAV) of $37.4 million. This projection would position Goff as the 15th-highest paid quarterback in terms of annual salary.
Goff reiterates that his future with the Lions is beyond his control, emphasizing his love for the team, coaches, and teammates. The quarterback played a pivotal role in the Lions’ postseason success, securing two playoff victories, a significant improvement for a team that had only one postseason win in its previous 65 seasons combined. In the 2023 regular season, Goff achieved career-highs with a 67.3% completion rate, 4,575 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, leading the Lions to 12 regular-season victories. His postseason performance was equally impressive, completing 69.4% of his passes for 837 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions in three games.
