Google Photos Upgrades with Free AI-powered editing Tools like AI photo editor
Google announced on Wednesday that it’s expanding its AI-powered editing features, previously exclusive to Pixel devices and paid subscribers, to all Google Photos users for free. This enhancement includes popular tools like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, Portrait Light, and more.
These advanced editing features have traditionally been a highlight of Google’s Pixel phones and a key feature of Google One cloud storage subscriptions. In response to the growing market of AI-powered editing tools, Google has decided to make these capabilities accessible to a wider audience at no cost.
However, there are a few considerations with this rollout. The new tools will begin rolling out on May 15 and may take several weeks to reach all Google Photos users. Additionally, specific hardware requirements must be met for some devices. For instance, on ChromeOS, users will need a Chromebook Plus with ChromeOS version 118+ or at least 3GB RAM. Mobile devices must run Android 8.0 or higher or iOS 15 or higher.
One standout feature is the Magic Editor, initially introduced with the Pixel 8 series. This tool utilizes generative AI to perform complex edits like filling gaps in photos, adjusting subjects, changing backgrounds, and more, all previously requiring professional software like Photoshop.
With this expansion, Magic Editor will be available on all Pixel devices, while iOS and Android users meeting the device requirements will receive up to 10 Magic Editor saves per month. Beyond this limit, a Premium Google One plan (2TB storage and above) is needed.
The suite of features becoming accessible to all Google Photos users includes Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, Sky suggestions, Color pop, HDR effects, Portrait Blur, and more. Notably, certain features like AI-powered Best Take remain exclusive to Pixel 8 and 8 Pro users.
Overall, Google’s move to democratize AI-powered editing tools within Google Photos represents a significant step towards offering sophisticated photo editing capabilities to a broader audience.
